We’re fucked.

We’re fucked.

We make each other feel like shit for being ourselves. I’m sick of it.

“Coney Island Baby” by Lou Reed

Ever notice something funny about those Velvet Underground records?  In the midst of all the cacophony you’ll come to rest on a sweet Pop song like “I’ll Be Your Mirror” or “Here She Comes Now.”  It’s like finding your kid sister skipping through a crowd of muggers, transvestites, junkies, and art dealers.  After John Cale left the band Lou Reed focused on his Pop songs, so that Loaded sounds like the answer to a question White Light / White Heat never asked.  As a solo artist Lou Reed would prove himself a brutal noisemaker in his own right—need I mention Metal Machine Music?—but every few years he’d release another album like Loaded: mellow Pop compositions that prove Lou still has a sweet side.  Coney Island Baby is one such record, and one of the best.

I’ve posted this before, but Lou Reed is always worthy of a re-post. I also feel like this is a great song for summer nights, so I thought I’d share the love.

Favorite song of all time.
